I made a spreadsheet comparing MFP, Lose It, Cronometer, MacroFactor, and FatSecret

I've been tracking my food on and off for a long time, and I wanted to figure out which tracking app is the best. So I decided to sit down and put together a comparison sheet of the 5 apps people talk about the most on reddit. And I wanted to share my findings it in case it can help others decide which app best fits their needs.

I looked at pricing, what's actually free vs. paywalled, AI logging, micronutrients, fasting timers, health integrations, and common complaints about each.

Full disclosure: I'm doing this research because I'm building a competing macro tracker, but I left my own app out of the chart to keep it neutral. This is just the big 5.

Some highlights:

  • Lose It doubled their annual price in Dec 2025 from $39.99 to $79.99, same price as MFP Premium
  • None of the apps offer any form of free AI logging
  • Cronometer has the most comprehensive micronutrient tracking (84-nutrient) and it's free
  • FatSecret is the only app with unlimited free trend history. The others cap free users at about 7 days or a couple of weekly reports
  • MacroFactor is still the only one that auto-adjusts your calorie target from your weight trend. Everything else is a static formula that you update manually.
  • Cronometer is the only app with a modern web UI. The other apps web interfaces look 20+ years old

The bottom of the sheet has a summarized "best for" as a tl;dr

If I got anything wrong, add a comment to the sheet or message me. I plan to keep this as accurate and up-to-date as I can and add more apps to this sheet over time. If there's a specific app you want me to add next, lmk
