Maintenance cals vs cal deficit

Maybe im a bit slow but i was having this discussion and i cant seem to understand it at all!

Essentially, i was wondering, if i am in a deficit of 1400 calories a day obviously ill lose weight eventually. (i used one of those online calculators) but then when i put my goal weight into the calculator my maintenance calories for my goal weight is slightly over 2000 calories.

My question is, if i eat in a calorie deficit until i hit my goal weight and then eat at my maintenance won’t I just gain the weight back because it’s over 500 calories higher?

Wouldn’t it make more sense to eat at the maintenance calories for the weight I want to be? Or will that stop me from losing weight?
