Last night I had a massive lightbulb moment which I wanted to share in case it resonates with anyone else as much as it has with me.
I've always said I'm not an emotional eater because I don't binge or overeat when I'm sad, anxious, stressed (or very rarely anyway). I tend to binge and give into cravings when I'm happy actually - during celebrations, date nights, holidays, at restaurants I love or during the weekend when I feel relaxed and have lots of free time.
Last night it clicked for me that any eating which isn't prompted by actual physical hunger is in fact emotional eating.
It doesn't matter which emotion, positive or negative, is driving it. If I'm eating and my body hasn't told me its physically hungry, I'm emotionally eating.
Knowing this makes me feel better equipped to recognise these binge / overeating urges for what they are in the moment they come up and (hopefully!!) make it easier to acknowledge and then dismiss them rather than acting on them.
