Caloric deficit is the way to go, but do you ever pay very close attention to the quality of food you’re eating?
I’m down bad mentally right now. I had so much progress done last year, I regained the weight and find myself at square one again. I’m 40, morbidly obese, type 2 diabetic, knees hurt, other things randomly hurt too. Things have gotten worse in the past 4-5 months as plantar fasciitis has taken over my life. I stretch, new shoes, and nothing seems to help. I ride the mtb, but would like to be more active daily. Anyway, the real reason I’m posting here is because I went to Mexico City last week. I went for a family party, I had to dress up for a themed party. Purchase a shirt that fit me ok while standing, but was bursting at the seams while sitting. Food has been my vice, more now that I’m not doing too well mentally. I get to CDMX on Wednesday, and from day one I’m eating all the delicious Mexican food. Quesadillas, tacos, baked goods, pozole, birria, etc. first 3 days we did a lot of things, Thursday being the only day going over 10k steps walking. Other days averaging 7k steps. The whole time I was there I wasn’t eating good, but you know what? No bloating, not super gassy, didn’t feel groggy or shitty after meals. We’d eat late nights and I could go to bed and wake up ready for breakfast. Saturday came, day of the party, and the shirt fit me loose. I sat down and it wasn’t bursting, it was awesome. Then I researched it a bit more and realized I’m not the only one that has experienced this. The food in the US is so damn processed, even at a caloric deficit, you can lose the weight but your triglycerides are awful. American tourists in Mexico City claimed to have lost up to 10lbs on one week stays. Even baked goods don’t have the levels of sugars we’ve got here. Not saying Mexico doesn’t struggle with obesity, because they have very high indexes of overweight people, but the fact the food doesn’t cause the same issues that I get here is pretty crazy. Some even said they have celiac and breads down there didn’t give them issues. Europeans chimed in and said it’s even healthier for them. All I’m saying is, do we have to buy organic products? I know what works for me, but may have to rethink my diet plan to make sure I’m making the right choices. Anywho, thanks for reading this rant if you got this far.
TLDR: US foods are so processed that in a 5 day visit to Mexico city, even while I ate terribly down there, I felt much better. No bloating, minimal gas.
