Why do I look way fatter than I was at my same weight 3 years ago?

A couple of years ago, I hit my heaviest point in life, I was around 135 kg at the time (male, 27 years old back then). That number on the scale felt huge already, and it really pushed me to make a change. I decided I couldn’t keep going like that, so I committed to losing weight. Over time, through a lot of effort and focus, I managed to drop down to around 107 kg. It wasn’t easy, but I felt so much lighter, healthier, and honestly like a completely different person compared to where I started.

But over the past few years, things took a turn. Life events, stress, and especially a long period of depression slowly chipped away at the progress I had made. Without really realizing it at first, I started putting weight back on. Little by little, the number on the scale crept higher again, until eventually I found myself back at that same 135 kg mark (30yrs old now).

Here’s the strange thing, though, and it’s what really bothers me: even though I’m technically back at the exact same weight as before, I don’t look the same at all. I actually look much bigger now than I did when I first hit 135 kg years ago. My body feels heavier, my frame looks wider, and the way clothes fit me makes me feel like I’m closer to 145 kg instead of 135 kg. When I catch myself in the mirror, it doesn’t just look like I regained what I lost, it looks like I’ve surpassed it, even though the scale tells me otherwise.

In almost every way possible ,face, stomach, arms, legs ,I feel like the weight is sitting differently this time around, and it makes me look and feel significantly larger than I ever remember being at this number. It’s like my body has changed its way of carrying the weight, and instead of looking like “my old 135 kg self,” I look inflated, heavier, and bulkier than ever.

So my question is: is this normal when you regain weight? Is it possible that the way fat is distributed changes after a big weight loss and regain, making you look bigger than you technically are? Or is it just in my head?
