How many calories do different activities actually burn?

As a layperson, you are confronted with a wide range of different claims about calorie consumption.

There are countless online calculators, tables in fitness magazines, YouTube gurus and medical experts with a degree in chiropractic who come to very different conclusions.

Some claim that you can lose an entire bar of chocolate with an hour of leisurely walking, others claim that the body has mechanisms that prevent this and that the actual loss is minimal.

But what is the actual state of scientific knowledge, i.e. the unfiltered truth, no gurus, no myths, no fringe hypotheses?

For example, how many calories does a man of 1.85 m (6 feet) height and 150 kg weight lose during an hour's walk?
