I am a 39 y/o female, 5’5 and 170lbs. For background I am a vet with burn pit exposure that has caused severe IBS, CFS, and Fibromyalgia. I am about 20 lbs overweight and the scale keeps slowly creeping up; I gained these 20 lbs over the past four years without a lot of lifestyle changes. I have tried calorie deficit tracking and intermittent fasting but only lose about 5-7 pounds over six months when I do that. I am fairly active as a sahm (don’t sit much during the day) and aim to go on a 30 min walk at least four times a week. Because of my chronic conditions I don’t do high intensity workouts tho, only gentle.
Here’s the twist: about two months ago I switched from doing IF and calorie counting to just concentrating on cleaning up my diet. Because of my IBS etc I don’t eat refined sugar, gluten, or fried foods anyway, but I made an effort to clean everything up and cook from scratch. I now eat what I would say is a Mediterranean Diet style. My biggest vice is a glass of dry wine with dinner (which I very much savor!) and maybe a dark chocolate here and there. I feel really really good, better than I have in years on this diet. My energy is good, my skin is glowing, even my mental health is better. I went to a checkup and my labs are great, blood pressure is great, thyroid is fine, cholesterol is low. I’m doing really good! But, my doctor commented that I am 20 lbs overweight and that puts me at risk, so I should look into losing that weight. With everything I’ve tried and my chronic conditions, this is upsetting because it’s really hard for me to lose even those 5 pounds, and I don’t feel as good as I do now with the clean diet lifestyle. I don’t want to switch back to the IF/calorie counting because I didn’t feel as good, but I also am scared that my scale keeps creeping up. Any advice for what I should do or prioritize? To be clear I have not lost any weight on the clean diet, only felt better and have good lab work.
