ELI5 strength training in calorie deficit ?

I keep hearing how it’s important to lift weights and eat high protein when in your weight loss journey. I’ve been doing this and it’s been a great experience in its own way. I really enjoy the progress of slowly going up in weights for various exercises.

I understand it’s unrealistic to put on muscle in a deficit. Is the main benefit that you retain, as best as you can, the existing muscle and mainly lose fat? What are the other benefits to lifting besides just preserving muscle when in a calorie deficit around 500-800 calories/day.

I have no plans on stopping weight lifting just curious if there are pros I’m not aware of. Anything from a physiological perspective?
