Over the last few months, I’ve gained 20 pounds. I got the Mirena IUD 2 months ago. Could there be any connection, and if so, what can I do about it?
I’ve hovered around 125-130 pounds for my entire adult life (I’m 36 now). Today I weighted myself and was 158, been steadily climbing. I’m not obsessive about weight, but I have always been into running and weight training, so I’m always at least vaguely conscious of how I’m eating, how my body looks, all that. I started getting concerned recently when I noticed I was suddenly gaining weight - but even more strangely, WHERE I was gaining it. My whole life I’ve kept weight on my legs, while my upper body is naturally lean. This time, I’ve suddenly put on a lot of fat in my breasts and my stomach. In fact, I first noticed after looking in the mirror and seeing that I’d gotten “side-boob” and waist rolls wearing my usual clothes. A complete change from anything I’ve ever experienced before!
I was a little freaked out. I never suspected the IUD because I thought it wasn’t known to cause weight gain, which is one of the reasons I chose to try it, as I have gained weight suddenly and temporarily on oral birth control pills in the past. But my activity levels and eating patterns haven’t changed - if anything I’ve noticed myself not craving and eating sugary foods as much since gaining weight.
I’m so confused now. Has anyone else experienced weight gain or odd fat deposits after implanting a Mirena or other IUD?
