Tips for counting calories in a sustainable way?

I stopped counting because I didn't want to obsess over every teaspoon of olive oil, and of course I quickly gained back ten pounds. I'm pretty sure I need to count calories for the foreseeable future, but I'd love any advice experienced folks might give about how to do it sustainably. Above all, how do you deal with restaurants and, more generally, food cooked by other people? I love being able to scan bar codes in MyFitnessPal, but unfortunately my sister's lasagna doesn't come with those (and I myself don't want to have to add every ingredient in and then divide by whatever, when I'm cooking my own lasagna). TIA for any tips!
