Hello! Has anyone else experienced this during their weight loss journey? Is there something that I am doing wrong?
Last January, I started my weight loss journey. I took several breaks for various reasons, but I still managed to lose 15kg by the end of September. After that, I took a longer break until recently, when I decided to get back on track. Last year, I also bought a treadmill to increase my daily steps (while working from home) and incorporated workouts.
This time, I’ve decided to focus only on reaching my daily step goal and leave the workouts for later. So far, I’ve been consistently hitting over 15k steps per day while eating between 1500–1700 calories to maintain a calorie deficit. My goal is to lose 25kg by June. I’m trying to eat as healthily as possible and drink over 2 litres of water per day. I have my last meal before 7pm and after that I only do light movement doing chores around the house, playing with my cats and showering before sleep.
The issue is that since restarting, I haven’t been sleeping well, and I remember experiencing the same thing last year. At the time, I was blaming stress and my poor mental health for that (I was going through a complicated breakup), but now I’m not so sure. During my recent weight loss break, when I ate at maintenance or even more sometimes, I slept very well and rarely woke up during the night. I was quite surprised by how much my sleep improved.
However, since I resumed the weight loss, my sleep has been poor. I fall asleep quickly because I’m tired, but I wake up several times during the night and struggle to fall back asleep, leaving me even more tired in the morning, often with headaches. Most people on a weight loss journey who are more active say their sleep improved significantly, but for me it does the opposite.
I did try last year to take a magnesium glycinate supplement and also took Ashwagandha and sometimes melatonin before sleep and they kind of helped, but I was still waking up during the night.
