Hi everyone,
I could really use some advice on how to handle a situation with my mom. Here's the context:
I'm 25F, 165 cm (5'5) tall, and over the past year and a half, I've lost a significant amount of weight, dropping from 90kg (198 lbs) to 60kg (132 lbs). I'm really proud of my progress and feel healthier than ever. My ultimate goal is to lose another 5kg (11 lbs), but I'm doing it steadily and responsibly.
To achieve my goals, I carefully track my calories and plan my meals for the week. For example, if I know I’m going out to dinner with friends over the weekend, I adjust my intake during the week to make room for those extra calories.
Here’s the problem: My mom frequently makes critical comments about my eating habits. If I indulge a little (like having dessert or an extra serving), she’ll say things like:
- "Are you sure you should be eating that?"
- "Be careful, or you’ll gain all the weight back."
She often says these things in front of others, which makes me feel really self-conscious. What makes this even harder is that my mom herself struggles with obesity (she’s 160 cm/5'3" and weighs about 95 kg/209 lbs). I understand she might be projecting her own insecurities, but her comments are hurtful.
Honestly, it’s starting to affect me emotionally. After her remarks, I sometimes feel like giving up on eating altogether and going on a hunger strike, which I know is unhealthy.
I’ve tried explaining my meal planning and calorie tracking, but she doesn’t seem to get it. How can I set boundaries with her without damaging our relationship?
Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
