Body recomp as a woman

I (f, 27) gained about 14lbs in the last couple of months and already have issues with fitting into my clothes properly. So I decided to head back to the gym and bring my body back in shape. I wasn’t at the gym since the covid lockdowns in 2020. Since then I was only running 2 times a week and did some home workouts. I stopped working out last year in August, because I went on a high dose of Accutane and my doctor suggested to me to workout less. Over time I became lazy and stopped fitness in general. I only went for long walks from time to time.

My issue in general is: before Covid I weighed around 132lbs (5‘9), now 14lbs more, but I looked flabby, kind of skinny fat. I was hitting the gym 5 times a week for 3 years and wanted to lower my body fat and build muscle to achieve a lean look. It didn’t really work out well. I had a caloric deficit of around 200 calories a day and from time to time I did some maintaining phases. I didn’t build muscle properly, even though I was consuming proteins like crazy and also didn’t really lose a lot of fat, since I was too inconsistent with my diet.

My goal hasn’t changed since then I want to lose fat, but I also want to build my muscles. This time I should change things and I heard of something called „body recomp“. It‘s mostly advised to people who have a high body fat percentage or people who don’t have a lot of muscles to start with. I would say I‘m the one who doesn’t have a good muscle structure. I‘m a total newbie at the gym again, which was expected after four years without gym training and nearly a year without any fitness training.

But there are some question I have regarding body recomp and this time I want to make it right. I don’t want to lose months or years, without significant changes like before. Body recomp means that I have to hit the gym and do weight training regularly. Instead of cutting or bulking I should eat at maintenance and pay attention to a high protein intake. So I know and understand that body recomp takes more time than bulking / cutting and that I have to be patient. But is it even advised to women? I actually just seen men with very good results, which probably leads back to the fact, that it’s easier and quicker for men in general to build more muscles than women.

I mean I could go on a diet, do some weight training to maintain what’s left of muscles, but then I have to go into a slight bulk to build muscles and back into a cut to become lean, but I don’t like that fluctuations in my body or diet. I could also start with bulking, but I actually don’t want to gain more weight, because I already have issues with my clothes.

Is body recomp the way to go for me? What should I pay attention to?
