the unexpected thing that made calorie counting actually sustainable

Tried calorie tracking so many times over the years but always gave up after a few weeks. Constant hunger made it feel like torture and I'd eventually crack and binge eat everything in sight. Figured I just had no willpower. This time decided to focus on hydration first before worrying about food. Started using the app waterminder to track my water and aimed to drink enough before even thinking about calories. Seemed too simple to matter but whatever. Game changer honestly. When I'm properly hydrated my appetite is so much more reasonable. Don't get those desperate cravings that used to derail everything. Can eat normal portions and feel satisfied instead of constantly fighting my brain. Also learned to drink water first when I get sudden urges to snack. Like 60% of the time the craving disappears completely. Turns out my body was sending mixed signals and I was interpreting everything as hunger. Been maintaining my deficit for 4 months now which is way longer than previous attempts. Not saying hydration is magic but it gave me a foundation that made the hard parts manageable. Sometimes you need to fix the basics before the advanced strategies will work.
