Hello everyone!
I started going to the gym a week ago. I got a tailored training plan from a trainer at the gym I am in, and I do a full body routine 3x a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
For context: I am female and completely new to strength training. I was born with hypotonia (low muscle tone) in my arms and hands, so lifting heavy things has always been very hard for me. In kindergarten I was also in occupational therapy to help with it.
But I have noticed how much I struggle with the upper body exercises, esp. bicep curl, shoulder press and chest press. With some exercises I deeply struggle, even without any weights. It makes me feel ashamed and humiliated.
Well, I do not mind going to the gym in general. Cardio? Eh, do not like it, but I gotta. Leg exercises? Fine! Stomach exercises? Not my favorite, but doable. But when I think of having to do any upper body exercises, esp. arm targeted ones, I really do not want to go. Tomorrow is my next day, and I really do not wanna do those exercises.
I did tell the trainer before hand, that I have hypotonia, and he also adjusted the exercises to fit me better, but it still feels like a lot.
I did a bicep curl at the beginner circuit and I had troubles even doing it at Level 1. (They have levels and not write weights in KG at the beginner circuit).
Having my gym routine split into different areas is not an option, since that way I would want to avoid the arm exercise day in general, and probably just skip it. Also, as a newbie, I think it is better to do a whole body routine in the beginning.
Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this? Not doing any arm exercises would not be a good option either, since you do have to train it somehow. But right now, it’s just super discouraging and I’m not sure how to stay motivated.
