No one is listening to me!

I work in an office with a lot of other obese people. My job doesn’t require me to be on my feet much or to move around. People here often bring in cakes, sweets, and other snacks to share with others which is lovely of them!

I’ve been obese pretty much my whole life and in November last year I got a real shock when a friend of a friend who was only a little heavier than me had a heart attack at just 27, the age I am now. Luckily she survived and is now recovering well and going to cardiac rehab but it gave me a huge kick up the arse to start getting myself in shape, or face not seeing my nephews grow up.

I’m about halfway through my weight loss journey and am working hard on my fitness too. I’ve been calorie counting, cycling my pedal assist ebike, and have very recently started couch to 5k (I was waiting to drop below 35 BMI before starting this so that it didn’t kill my knees!)

I look very different from when I started and I feel so much better. I still have a fair way to go but I’m so happy with the progress I’m making. I’ve lost almost 30 kg!

But something at work has been absolutely driving me mad. People have commented on my weight loss and how much better I’m looking which is honestly a great confidence boost. But a few of the other obese people in my work are now asking for tips/advice on how to get started themselves. I always say the same thing “it’s simple but not easy. Count your calories, weigh your food, and try and move a bit every day”.

I get so much resistance for this. “It’s not that simple” - it is. “That won’t work for everyone” - it’s going to work for 99% of people. “You have to cut sugar though right?” - no. “You must’ve done a keto/paleo/vegan/gluten free/anti inflammatory diet!” - no, I eat generally the same stuff just less. “It must be so hard not to eat out or have snacks!” - ehhhh you can still do that!

Why does everyone just not want to hear what it really takes to shift the weight? Why are people standing speaking to me with an (amazing) home made brownie in their hand telling me who has lost 29 kg what fad I must have tried to lose the weight when I’m saying maybe just eat half that brownie this time?

It is driving me mad! Anyone else experiencing this?
