Embracing the Journey: How I Lost 42kg and Found Myself

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share my weight loss journey with you all. At my heaviest, I weighed 160kg. I had no energy and was always tired. I’d wake up, and just three hours later, I’d feel exhausted again and need to nap. My joints hurt, and simple tasks like putting on socks or lacing my shoes became struggles. Even wiping myself was tough. My heart rate was through the roof, and my blood pressure was so high that I needed medication to keep it under control. I knew that if I continued down this path, I was shortening my lifespan and quality of life.

I considered getting a gastric bypass and even visited a doctor for information. Unfortunately, that experience wasn’t great. The doctor was pushy and only focused on my BMI, saying the surgery was my only option. The doctors opinion is everyone with a BMI over 40 is not going to make it.
He didn’t discuss the downsides at all. It felt like he was just seeing dollar signs. After doing my own research, I decided against the surgery. I realized that with or without a bypass, I’d still need to change my lifestyle if I wanted to lose weight and keep it off.

So, I took matters into my own hands. I started eating healthier, weighing my food, counting calories, and swapping ingredients for more nutrient-dense options—all while still enjoying my favorite foods. I also looked for ways to increase my daily activity. For instance, instead of driving, I started walking my 5-year-old daughter to school. This simple change helped me hit around 7,000 steps a day, and it gave us more bonding time, which was a huge bonus!

So far, I’ve lost 42kg, but I still have about 30kg to go. Being more than halfway to my goal and noticing major health improvements keeps me motivated. In a recent check-up, I was able to stop taking my heart medication! I have way more energy now and don’t need to take as many naps as I used to.

I’ve also started going to the gym since I’m noticing some loose skin. But honestly, I wear it with pride; they remind me of how far I’ve come and that I never want to go back to where I was. You could say they’re my battle scars.

Thanks for reading! I hope my journey can inspire others who might be struggling.
