I've heard a lot of conflicting information about this. Some will say that fasting is beneficial because our bodies are made to go long periods without eating. Being that we aren't eating for a long period of time, our bodies are forced to use our stored fat for energy, so we burn fat quickly. We will also go into autophagy (repairing damaged cells), so it can help fight viruses because they are unable to replicate during this stage of fasting. We also achieve mental focus during fasting. Again, they use our ancestral background to support this. Because we used to have to hunt for food, we would definetly not be eating 3 meals a day. And the mental focus is triggered after a period of time to make us better hunters for the next meal.
However, if this is the case, why do so many people feel ill and faint when they don't eat? They get the opposite of mental clarity. Others still support eating 3 meals a day or eating small and frequently throughout the to keep our metabolism going at a consistent rate. They say if you fast, your body will go into "starvation mode" and when you finally do have your next meal, even though you eat less, you will gain weight because your body adapts and knows it's going a long time without food. Additionally, wouldn't fasting be bad for those with insulin resistance or diabetes since there's a huge spike in sugar when you eat and then a dramatic drop during fasting? I would imagine that it would be such a shock to the body.
I want to lose weight in a healthy way, so I'd like to know which lifestyle is best for the body for long-term results.
