The ambient boringness of weight loss

Lately on my weight loss journey, one thing I’ve noticed is that for the most part, it’s a very passive journey. Don’t get me wrong - there is a lot to do, and much more not to do, but, because of the fact that “just eat less” really is the whole of it, I often find myself sitting on the couch, alone with my thoughts and just thinking about weight loss, and quickly reaching the conclusion that right now, no matter how motivated I am - there isn’t much to do. I can go cook something healthy, but I’m already sticking to my diet. I can go for a run, but I already have a workout regimen that I enjoy, and I don’t want to break from it.

I think this is a unique property of weight loss, most other long term goals, like learning a language - you can always take active steps towards it, and these bursts of motivation can have huge effects on your progress. Here however, these bursts can take the form of frustration - I’m sitting here, feeling pumped up, ready to do something, ready to “lose some weight” and nothing.

The reality of it is that it really is a long, hard, unforgiving and uniquely boring process.
