Have I actually been losing fat this whole time?

Over the last two or so weeks I've been getting back on track with weight loss, eating at around 1500 to 1700 calories per day. I've gone over that limit exactly twice. Once, knowingly since I was eating out with friends and I felt like I could afford the minor weight gain, and the other was more due to not knowing just how much was in my meal (I don't cook my meals at home, my parents handle it)

I decided to get a body composition assessment today to find that I'm holding on to more water than I thought, and the thought hit me: have I been losing water weight this entire time?

I have no idea how possible that is, I don't know a thing about the science behind weight loss besides CICO is almost guaranteed to help lose weight. Problem being I don't know how much of the weight I lost was fat as opposed to water weight/muscle.

Does anyone here have an idea? I currently can't see any big differences since I've only lost around 4kg+ (8-9lbs). Should I be taking measurements too? And if so, where are the parts I should be measuring?
