I have counted my calories meticulously for nearly 12 months. I weigh every ingredient, read the labels, ask the waiting staff for nutritional information at restaurants etc. I lost about 30 lbs last year through a combination of a CICO diet, running about 30km a week and giving up drinking. I targeted a calorie deficit of 1000 a day for 15 weeks which I found very tough. I promised myself that I would never diet for such a long period of time again. I felt I could diet for 1 or 2 weeks at a time but I promised I would weigh myself every day and nip any weight gain in the bud quickly.
My target weight is 66kg to 68kg, until last week I had been around 69kg and pretty much eating what I wanted but not gaining weight. I was able to eat about 3,000 calories a day and maintain weight due to the amount of running I was doing.
I got a strain in my knee 3 weeks ago and decided to take time off from running to do knee strengthening exercises. On top of this I was eating more that usual due to various Christmas dinners. I watched my weight gradually go up and up on the scales. Then on Boxing Day I hit 70.65kg after having two huge Christmas dinners on Christmas day. I gained over 1kg in one day which I know is mostly water weight but seeing a "7" at the start of the scales horrified me so I immediately started targeting a 1000 calorie deficit again.
Having a calorie deficit was tough and reminded me about the 15 week ordeal I went through last year. I kept telling myself that it should only be for 2 or 3 weeks which was a great comfort. This morning I'm back at 69.30kg so close to the weight I was before my running injury and the Christmas meals. I feel really encouraged that when I realised I had put on weight I acted on it and it didn't take too long to get close to where I was (acknowledging I still have some work to do). It was always my plan to nip any weight gain in the bud early but to actually put it into practice feels awesome.
I wanted to post this to allow myself a chance to put it into words and reflect on it. It might help others as well who are going through a medium term diet and finding it a challenge, once you get through that there is a great chance you will be in far better control of your weight.
