This has become an on-again-off-again post about Running in LoseIt.
All levels of runner are welcome here, from first timers to experienced marathoners. We welcome someone who just ran for the first time or is just starting couch to 5K (r/c25k) as eagerly as someone who has thousands of miles of experience.
This post is for sharing your weekly progress or excitement with running. From training you got in this last week, your first run, a virtual race, or a real race, we'd love to hear what you did. Got a running related NSV (non-scale victory), we'd love to hear. Have a question or need advice, we are here to help.
In addition to sharing your progress each week, I ramble on about some topic related to running. This week's topic - the best running weather.
Fall is the Best Running Weather
There's lots of articles and proof here to back up my opinion. Now you might quibble here about whether the season is called fall or autumn. But that's a different conversation. But fall is just perfect in my book.
Here's some reasons why I love to run in the fall.
Temperature
My ideal temperature to run is 50F-55F or 10C-13C. At this temperature I don't need a warm hat or gloves. Below this range, I do. Also, at this temperature I can wear long or short sleeves depending on the training I am doing. Mostly, I will endure the early chill of short sleeves to feel more comfortable towards the end of the run. Adding a vest is the perfect addition here if you feel a little chilled at these temps.
Now there's some caveats here -- rain or wind can make you add in hat and gloves here, or put on long sleeves.
Race Season
October is major race month. The six major marathons are run from the last weeks of September (Berlin) to to the first weeks of November (New York). During October you have the London, Chicago, Boston, and Tokyo marathons -- all big affairs. There's something exciting about having all this running going on and people hitting records or newcomers rising to the top of the field.
Fall Leaves (mixed blessing)
I love the leaves this time of year. It's gorgeous -- but when it's wet the leaves are incredibly slick. Be careful out there if you go for a run in the rain or with the route still wet.
I've slipped a few times while running on wet leaf covered trails but haven't taken a serious spill yet. Also, leaves can cover something that causes you to trip. Just be careful. I slow down through heavy leaf coverage.
Thanksgiving Runs
One last reason to run -- Turkey Day races! Thanksgiving in the USA is a huge running day. I love the crowds, usually full of families reunited for the holiday. You'll see parents and kids out there lining up and going for it. At the same time, it doesn't seem competitive. It's just a good fun time.
Why not the Spring?
Two reasons --
1) It is preceded by Winter so it is harder to get out and run in the ramp up to Spring and any races you have.
2) Mornings can be too cold, requiring gloves and hats.
What is your favorite time of year to run?
